Geneviève Brozec, the soul through art

In the studio of artist Geneviève Brozec, there is always a project underway, a canvas waiting for her, an idea driving her. Geneviève grew up in Lisbon, in a family where artistic sensitivity always held a place of honor. A precocious student, she earned her baccalaureate at 16 before leaving to study at the Sorbonne. There, she nourished herself on the cultural richness of Paris, poetry, and the museum heritage. 

But before dedicating herself fully to painting, she lived several lives. Twenty years spent in the pharmaceutical industry forged her solid expertise in public relations and communication, leading her to found her own agency specializing in the medical and event sectors, supporting laboratories in their product launches in France. Then came the call of the open sea: a solo departure, immersing herself across several continents to recenter herself and observe nature, landscapes, populations, and their relationship with the world. This insatiable curiosity and need to explore remain intact on her canvases today.  

The pandemic acted as a turning point. When the world's rhythm came to a halt, she began to draw, write, and then paint. Writing came first, but she hit a stumbling block: a lack of reserve, an exposure she found too direct. Painting, on the other hand, offered her a space of freedom of expression that truly suited her. In her view, everyone can make their own interpretation of a canvas, without the need to reveal everything. This period of intimate introspection confirmed that she had found her most authentic mode of expression, leading her to turn professional as a painter in 2023. What runs through her work is a tender and lucid look at living things. The acceptance of difference, the conviction that every existence—however modest—has its place, and above all, the preservation of that simple wonder of being alive.  

Her style oscillates between abstraction and figuration, marked by vivid, piercing, and sharp colors. She paints intuitively, without planning everything in advance, letting her gestures guide the color. This freedom is evident even in her tools: alongside acrylics, oil and dry pastels, or ink, she repurposes kitchen utensils, such as a spatula, or uses construction tools. It is her own way of breaking free from rules and boxes regarding what is "meant" for creating. On wood or canvas, Geneviève also ventures into sculpture. Among her current desires, a project is taking shape: developing a limited series of epoxy resin sculptures. A new material to tame.  

"For me, art, and painting in particular, is the transcription of a perspective, a choice of angle in relation to the world. This angle is unique to every artist because it is representative of their feelings, their emotions, their culture, and their life path. Aesthetics can be artistic on the condition that they contain these elements. Without that, it is craftsmanship—highly respectable, mind you, but still craftsmanship." 

Through her repurposed tools and sharp colors, Geneviève Brozec does not seek to please. She seeks to express what words sometimes struggle to convey.
